A significant number of organizations around the world have been affected by a vulnerability that was identified in Progress Software's MOVEit application. Hamilton College received confirmation from two of our service providers, National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) and the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA), that certain personally identifiable information of some members of our community may have been impacted.
Hamilton College does not have a local instance of the MOVEit application and is not responsible for this data incident. If your information is impacted, you will be contacted by either the National Student Clearinghouse or the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association.
We have been notified by TIAA that TIAA systems and services were not impacted by this incident. The TIAA investigation confirms that retirement and financial information stored in TIAA systems and services remains secure and protected. TIAA has informed Hamilton that the incident involved Pension Benefit Information, a vendor that TIAA uses for verifying death notices and that uses the MOVEit Transfer tool.
Safety precautions you can take now:
- Regularly review your financial accounts and be vigilant for any suspicious activity.
- Check your credit report at annualcreditreport.com to monitor for any unauthorized changes.
- Consider placing a credit freeze with each of the three credit reporting agencies.
- Students may consider enrolling in an identity theft protection service like TrueIdentity from TransUnion.
National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) serves as a source for educational verification, research services, and compliance reporting. NSC shared more information on their website.
The Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA) provides retirement, investment and insurance services for those working for nonprofit organizations in academic, research, medical, government, and cultural fields. TIAA uses a number of vendors to deliver their services, including Pension Benefit Information (PBI).
Our Information Security team is actively monitoring the situation and working with the service providers to ensure our third party providers take all required steps to protect impacted individuals. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct your inquiries to Hamilton College's Director of Information Security and Privacy: jtylutki@hamilton.edu.
