Robert Albert Redmond '61

Dec. 30, 1938-May. 5, 2007

Robert Albert Redmond ’61, a retired U.S. Army officer, was born on December 30, 1938, in Utica, NY. A son of Albert C. ’31, a physician and later Oneida County coroner, and Louise Wingert Redmond, he was a grandson of Daniel W. Redmond, Class of 1901, and nephew of John C. ’28 and Richard J. Redmond ’33. Bob Redmond grew up in Remson and Barneveld, N.Y., and was graduated from Holland Patent Central High School. He came to Hamilton in 1957, after preparation at Williston Academy in Massachusetts. He joined Delta Upsilon and went out for football and hockey. After a year on the Hill, however, he left the College, having received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy.

After his graduation with a B.S. degree from West Point in 1962, Bob Redmond began a 20-year career in the Army. He served tours of duty in Europe, Korea, and Japan, as well as in the U.S., and was stationed in combat zones with Special Forces and the Field Artillery in Vietnam. He retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1982. Having acquired an M.S. in physical education from Indiana University in 1973, he continued to pursue studies in that field, earning an M.S. in exercise science from George Washington University in 1985, and a Ph.D. in exercise physiology from the University of Maryland in 1991. In retirement, he also engaged in a variety of occupations, including fitness and sports medicine consultant.

Robert A. Redmond, a resident of Frederick, MD, died on May 5, 2007, after a long battle with cancer, believed to have been caused by his exposure to Agent Orange while in Vietnam. He is survived by his wife, Patricia T. Redmond; two daughters, Jacqueline Overton and Erin Webb; a son, Robert Redmond; and eight grandchildren, three sisters, and a brother, Douglas C. Redmond ’70.
