What Is Your ‘What If’?
NEW PRESIDENT STEVEN Tepper introduced himself to Hamilton by asking a seemingly simple question: What if? He encouraged all of us — staff, students, and professors — to consider the possibilities of what we might do instead of focusing only on what we have always done as learners, teachers, colleagues, and leaders.
It seems fitting to reflect upon this inquiry as we begin a new academic year as well as a new presidential term. It is also applicable to you as you peruse this publication. What if you chose to read the class notes from a year that is not your own and discovered a shared interest or fascinating story? What if you refer to the Necrology section and learn about the life of a Kirkland or Hamilton alum who inspires you or makes you feel grateful for their contributions? Or what if you look through the features about and by our alumni volunteers and contemplate how you could make the College a bit better by your service? Choosing to be a little curious can unearth so many possibilities.
We see this every year as students begin a new year on the Hill. They move beyond their comfort zones, embrace challenges, and rediscover one of the many gifts of being on this campus: the art and act of wonder. When we collectively connect to inquisitiveness, we gain a unique power of community. For when individuals come together in shared purpose, passion, or meaning, it is when our “what ifs” turn into realities.
It is also when we discover another vital question for ourselves and our world: What’s next?
