2011 Bell Ringer
Robert L. deCourcy ’38
2011 Bell Ringer Award
Citation for Robert L. deCourcy ’38
In a 1974 alumni survey, you wrote that you were “now or formerly an officer, trustee or director of 27 local organizations.” In a similar survey in 1990, you noted, “always willing to help where needed.” A lifetime of service to your community and to your alma mater confirms you did not make this offer lightly.
As a student at Hamilton, you majored in English literature and mathematics, joined Chi Psi and competed on the track team. Following graduation and a brief stint in MetLife’s actuarial training program, you taught math for several years before taking over your family’s building supply business in Washington, Connecticut. All the while you were involved in the life of your community, from heading the PTA and Lions Club, to volunteering with the ambulance service, to serving on the boards of the local hospital and 4-H foundation. You also took on leadership roles with organizations devoted to conservation and open-space preservation.
Along with these many commitments, you always found time for Hamilton. A class agent for more than three decades, you have led by example, often creating anonymous challenges to motivate your classmates. You make a memorial gift to the College each time one of your classmates passes and write heartfelt letters of condolence to their spouses. Over the years you have enthusiastically referred dozens of prospective students to the College, volunteered for the Career Center and returned regularly for reunions, Fallcoming and other celebrations. And then there’s your wonderful sense-of-humor — when you heard about Hamilton’s GOLD Group for young alumni, you wrote a letter requesting the College add a SILVER Group: Seniors Investing the Last of their Vanishing Resources.
You once noted, “My whole life has been enriched by the training, knowledge and associations from my years at Hamilton.” And for the past 75 years, Hamilton has been blessed by its association with Bob deCourcy. In appreciation for all you have contributed to the College, we take great pleasure in presenting you with the Bell Ringer Award.
