Respiratory Virus Guidance
We follow the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for respiratory infections including COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. Specific links can be found on the Health Center webpage. We also think this guidance works when managing other fever-related illnesses.
Strategies
- Individuals should stay put in their dorm/home if they are not feeling well and running a fever
- You should not attend class, athletics, work, or social activities until you meet the criteria listed below for at least 24 hours:
- Your symptoms are getting better overall AND
- You no longer have a fever without the use of fever-reducing medication
- When returning to normal activities, you should take precautions for at least the next 5 days, including hygiene, masks, and being respectful of the people around you as they may have medical conditions placing them at risk for more severe illness
- If you are immunocompromised or have a chronic medical condition that may place you at higher risk for complications, please contact the Student Health Center at 315-859-4111 to review your symptoms and management strategies
Grab-N-Go Meals
- You may mask up and pick up Grab-N-Go meals for yourself
- You may also have a friend pick up food for you and leave it at your door
- If you have not been provided a reusable To-Go container, you should reach out to Lori Barone: lbarone@parkhurstdining.com
Symptom Management
- Make sure to manage good self-care, especially when you are sick
- Do not take any medication to which you have a known allergy
- Use over-the-counter analgesics per the package instructions for symptoms of fever, sore throat, and body aches unless you are allergic
- Over-the-counter cough syrup may be used if it has been helpful to you in the past
- Push fluids for hydration
- Get extra rest to help your body heal
- Sneeze, blow your nose, or cough into a disposable tissue, and discard the tissue immediately into a waste bin. Then make sure to wash your hands with warm soapy water or use hand sanitizer if you do not have access to a sink.
Roommate Strategies
- Try to keep at least 6 feet of separation between yourself and your roommates
- Open the window, weather permitting
- Please work to communicate with each other to respect each other’s needs
