A panel of Hamilton College faculty experts will discuss “What’s Going on in Syria,” on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 8 p.m., in the Red Pit (room 127), KJ.  The panel will feature former U.S. Ambassador Edward Walker, Jr., Professor of History Shoshana Keller, and Visiting Instructor of Critical Languages Mireille Koukjian. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow during the 2013-14 academic year.

Hamilton students enrolled in Steve Wu's Health Economics class, Alan Cafruny's International Political Economy class, and Herm Lehman's Intro. to Public Health classes were invited to meet and speak with Sacerdote Great Names speaker Dr. Bernard Kouchner in a small, informal group before the large public lecture held later in the evening.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, presented a paper at the International Studies Association annual convention in San Francisco on April 6. He gave a paper titled “The Crisis and the German Question,” and also participated on a roundtable on “The Crisis of the Greek State.”

Karl F. Inderfurth, the Sol M. Linowitz Professor of International Affairs and former assistant secretary of state for South Asian Affairs, will deliver a lecture titled “Is India the Next Superpower?” on Tuesday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m., in the Red Pit. His lecture is sponsored by the Government Department and is free and open to the public.

Brigham Young University Professor Wade Jacoby visited Hamilton recently to lecture on Germany and the continued economic woes in Europe.  As Americans, we often view the Great Recession through the lens of our own experiences; however, Europe has found itself in an even more precarious position.  With inordinately high unemployment rates and debt-to-GDP ratios, many countries in the Eurozone are on the precipice of financial disaster.  Germany, however, has weathered the crisis fairly well.  As a result, European countries have turned to German Chancellor Angela Merkel for leadership, guidance and economic support.

Seamlessly and loquaciously describing his experiences as an embedded combat advisor, Hamilton alumnus Matt Zeller ’04 returned to the Hill on Feb. 7 to present a sobering yet inspirational recounting of his service in Afghanistan and the lessons he learned there.

Nine Hamilton students traveled to Montreal January 24-27 to participate in the 24th annual McGill University Model United Nations Conference (McMUN).

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, presented a paper at a conference on "The Euro Crisis and the Future of the EU" at the Moynihan Institute for Global Affairs, Maxwell School, Syracuse University on Sept. 20. His paper was titled "The Crisis and the Re-emergence of the 'German Question.'"
