The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) provides fellowships for advanced research or study in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Fellowships are intended to support a year-long stay and priority is given to graduate students for dissertation-related study or research.
Candidates apply directly to ASF. No institutional nomination is required.
ELIGIBILITY
  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • Applicants must have received their undergraduate degree by the time that they begin their studies or project in Scandinavia. ASF prefers applicants to have some ability in the language of their host country.
SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants must have a well-defined study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential.

DURATION

The ASF prefers to support senior graduate students at the dissertation level for yearlong study or research. Short-term grants of three to four months are available.

AMOUNT

Fellowships are valued at up to $23,000. The number of awards depends on the total funds available by country. Smaller grants of approximately $5,000 are available to support one to three months of postdoctoral study.

DEADLINE

November 1. Applicants must provide a completed ASF application, references, and transcripts to ASF by November 1. All materials must reach ASF by this date. Award results are announced by April 15.
