  • As Hamilton  prepares for its new bike path, cultural anthropologist Luis Vivanco’s lecture, “Reconsidering the Bicycle,” could not be more timely. Vivanco, director of the Global and Regional Studies Program and founding director of the Global Studies Program at the University of Vermont, spoke about the current global state of using bikes as alternative transportation.

  • With much cooperation from Mother Nature, Bon Appétit, Hamilton’s food service provider, hosted the 9th annual Eat Local Challenge under sunny skies on Sept. 24, in McEwen Courtyard. The menu included the best of Central New York with dishes like salt potatoes, honeyed raspberries, local apple sauce, Sun Gold tomatoes, roast pork loin, grilled garlic chicken, acorn squash, apples and cider and grape juice.

  • Bon Appétit Management Company, Hamilton’s food service provider, will host the 9th annual Eat Local Challenge on Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in McEwen Courtyard. The chefs at Hamilton will join more than 400 other Bon Appétit restaurants and cafés in preparing a special meal made entirely with ingredients sourced from within 150 miles of their kitchens.

  • After an extensive and competitive application process, Rachel Sobel ’15 has been selected to be a student representative of the American Chemical Society at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The annual convention will take place from Nov. 11-22 in Warsaw, Poland, and will address proposals for a comprehensive international agreement to reduce carbon gas emissions.

  • Hamilton’s 6th annual “Cram & Scram” reuse/rebuy sale will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 27 and 28, in Sage Rink. Tuesday’s sale hours are 12:30 - 5 p.m., and Wednesday’s sale will take place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

  • Hamilton College is situated roughly 30 miles from Green Lake, a rare meromictic lake in Onondaga Country.  This lake is considered special due to the segregated nature of its water and multiple base layers of sediment that have remained preserved over the past thousands of years.  This summer, Kevin Boettger ’14 and Matt Brzustoski ’15 studied the lake with Associate Professor of Biology Michael McCormick to identify its unique characteristics and features.

  • In his April 22 lecture, author and University of Western Ontario professor Tony Weis traced the beginning of the global food crisis to advancements in agribusiness, farm subsidies and global food aid that then forced many small scale farmers in developing countries out of business.

  • Students came back from spring break to some good news concerning sustainability on the Hill. Hamilton was the winner of the three-week NY Negawatt/CCN Competition Challenge among New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium peer schools.  The student body, led by Hamilton Environmental Action Group (HEAG) reduced electricity consumption across all Hamilton residence halls by 5.8%, which equates to 27,909 kilowatt hours or approximately $2,500.
