Wedbush Bank has announced that Mark Farrell '74, P'11,14 has joined the institution as senior vice president and director of government & institutional banking. In his new role, Farrell will be responsible for leading sales efforts nationwide.

Creating sustainable urban centers in Utica and Syracuse was the topic of a panel discussion hosted by the Levitt Center on Oct. 27.

Students in the Semester in Washington Program met with U.S. Representative Richard Hanna of New York’s 24th District on Oct. 12. Rep. Hanna fielded a variety of questions from the group about his experiences as a new member of the House of Representatives and about the issues confronting the 112th Congress.

The Utica area is sometimes described as a food desert, or an area where healthy, fresh food is not immediately available. This lack of fresh food forces residents to turn to cheaper, less healthy options such as convenience store food. Stephanie Ingraham ’13 is an intern with Utica Urban Gardens at For the Good, Inc., an initiative that works to fight poverty and provide low-income individuals with fresh crops while preserving the environment.

Abby Abelson K'74 has been named chair of the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases at Cleveland Clinic. Abelson joined Cleveland Clinic in 2002 and had served as interim chair since May 2008. "I am honored to chair a department that has a long tradition of accomplishments in patient care, research and education. Our staff includes national leaders and it is an honor to support them in our continued growth," said Abelson.

George Baker ’74 returned to Hamilton on March 3 and spoke with students about starting their career search in Washington. The discussion, titled “So You Want to Work in Washington, D.C.: A User’s Guide to Finding a Job in the Nation's Capital,” introduced students to the nature of the Washington job market and provided a framework for beginning the search. Baker is a partner at Williams & Jensen PLLC in D.C., a litigation lobbying firm where he started working in 1980.

John Donohue '74 has been appointed C. Wendell and Edith M. Carlsmith Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. The chair commemorates a family whose ties with the university span three generations, and Donohue will be the fifth distinguished faculty member to hold the endowed chair since it was established in 1977 by the Carlsmiths.

Jane Friedman of Writer’s Digest has interviewed John Sundman '74 about the challenges of self-publishing for her blog There Are No Rules. Sundman is the author of Acts of the Apostles, Cheap Complex Devices, and The Pains and is developing his fourth novel, Creation Science.

Gordon Kaye '74 will be one of four industry professionals to judge Hudson Valley Wine Magazine’s first-ever "The Face of the Hudson Valley Wine" Label Competition.  The competition is currently accepting entries from all winemakers in the Hudson Valley American Viticultural Area.  Awards will go to the best-designed labels in a series of categories, including "Best Type Design," "Best Use of Illustration or Photography," "Most Memorable Label" and more.  Judging will take place in May 2010 and the winning labels in all categories will be published in the Summer 2010 issue of Hudson Valley Wine Magazine.   

Dr. Rocco Orlando '74 was named as the first chief medical officer for regional health provider Hartford Healthcare and Hartford Hospital in Connecticut.  Also named a senior vice president, Rocco will head the staff of three acute care hospitals and other specialty health care providers.  His job will be to help and inspire Hartford Healthcare staff to reach national recognition in patient quality and safety.  Elliot Joseph, president and CEO of Hartford Healthcare and Hartford Hospital described Dr. Orlando as “a proven leader with the talents, experience and personality to guide the clinicians of Hartford Healthcare into the future."
