Abby Abelson K'74 has been named chair of the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases at Cleveland Clinic. Abelson joined Cleveland Clinic in 2002 and had served as interim chair since May 2008. "I am honored to chair a department that has a long tradition of accomplishments in patient care, research and education. Our staff includes national leaders and it is an honor to support them in our continued growth," said Abelson.
Abelson is currently an assistant professor at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and is a fellow of the American College of Rheumatology. She is chair of the Medical and Scientific Committee of the Arthritis Foundation and a board member of the organization's Northeastern Ohio Chapter. She has been named among the "Best Doctors in America" more than ten times and received the American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation Clinical Scholar Educator Award in 2007.
At Kirkland, Abelson majored in environmental studies. She earned her doctor of medicine from Case Western University in 1979. She completed a residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Cleveland and a rheumatology fellowship at University Hospitals in Cleveland.
