Course Description: An introduction to Middle East and North African politics with an emphasis on foundational topics central to understanding the region. Applying a variety of theoretical lenses, the course covers Orientalism, colonialism and state-building, the relationship between religion and politics, the persistence of authoritarianism, gender, identity construction, Imazighen and other non-Arab populations, oil and rentier economies, and the Arab Spring and its aftermath.
