Event Description

Reclaiming Ukrainian Spaces Event Image

Join Ukrainian artist and filmmaker Oksana Kazmina in an exploration of space as an archive of human experience through the work of the Freefilmers—a cinemovement from Mariupol, Ukraine, of which she is a part. The event will begin with a screening of Vasyl Tkachenko-Lyakh's short film, Kharaltida (2023), in which the filmmaker revisits the footage of his family home in Mariupol, which is currently under Russian occupation. With his brother, Vasyl searches  for their grandfather's WWII medals, buried in the garden which is now scarred by a hit from a Russian missile, and through conversations with his mother and aunt, he digs into silenced family histories and his Azov Greek heritage. The violence inflicted on his ancestors is seen in the light of the current genocidal war waged by the Russian Federation.

Following the screening, Oksana will lead a silk printing workshop using the artist Ulyana Bychenkova’s ‘Korchuvatka/Korchuvatytsia’ typeface. Developed collaboratively between Ulyana and Freefilmers, this typeface commemorates Ukrainian post-industrial localities and communities with which Freefilmers work as activists and volunteers. Oksana will share insights into the philosophy behind the font, as well as some general typeface history. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to print the names of various Ukrainian topoi on their own wearable items or on a provided t-shirt.

Printing materials and snacks will be provided.
