Assistant Dean of Off-Campus Study

Hamilton College seeks a dynamic and innovative leader to spearhead strategic planning for its Off-Campus Study Office.  The new position of Assistant Dean of Off-Campus Studies offers an exciting opportunity for a professional with excellent leadership and administrative skills who possesses a deep knowledge and vision for international and domestic off-campus study. This is a perfect position for one who enjoys the challenge of working with faculty and students to raise awareness of the contribution of study abroad/off-campus study to a liberal arts education in the context of an open curriculum with an emphasis on developing students’ critical thinking and communication skills. The Assistant Dean, reporting to the Dean of Faculty, will be responsible for establishing the Off-Campus Study Office and will have primary responsibility for all its functions. The Assistant Dean will have the opportunity to develop and implement strategic directions for study abroad that augment Hamilton’s mission, purposes and goals and that clarify and strengthen the position of off-campus study in the curriculum. The Assistant Dean will represent Hamilton in local, regional, and national settings and will have the primary responsibility of cultivating an office that will promote and strengthen off-campus study experiences in both Hamilton and non-Hamilton programs.

            The Off-Campus Study Office is the resource center for students wishing to study away from Hamilton, and is therefore responsible for guiding students through their decision making and application processes. Hamilton has a long and strong history of student participation in off-campus study programs with a participation rate of over 61% in recent graduating classes (with approximately 51% studying abroad and 14% in domestic off-campus study).  Hamilton’s three nationally recognized study abroad programs (in China, France, and Spain) are especially distinctive for their academic rigor and cultural immersion. Hamilton also has a growing program in India in consortium with two other New York colleges.  In addition, students are approved to study in more than 100 non-Hamilton programs throughout the world.  Hamilton also hosts three domestic off-campus programs for students to study in New York City, Washington DC, and the New England Center for Children in Boston.

The Director’s main responsibilities are three-fold:

Hamilton’s Mission for Off-Campus Study
¦Develop and implement a long-term vision and strategic plan for off-campus study.
¦Strengthen the curricular integration of off-campus study with the College’s Purposes and Goals.

Coordination of Off-Campus Programs
¦Develop coordinated and standardized policies and protocols to be coordinated with Hamilton and non-Hamilton programs.
¦Work closely with the General Directors of Hamilton’s programs, who are the academic heads of their programs, to ensure the programs have the administrative support necessary to meet their goals.
¦Promote and foster the continuity of Hamilton study abroad programs, including professional development for staff.
¦Supervise study abroad coordinators who support Hamilton’s programs in Beijing, Madrid, and Paris.

Administrative Duties
¦Oversee all operations of the Off-Campus Study office.
¦Chair the Committee of Off-Campus Study.
¦Supervise advising of students.
¦Evaluate and monitor the quality of non-Hamilton program options.
¦Work closely with the Committee on Academic Standing and Dean of Students office to uphold and administer academic regulations associated with study away.
¦Serve as a member of the Enrollment Management Committee

¦Graduate degree (PhD or MA) with at least 3 years of experience in study abroad capacities are required.
¦Excellent interpersonal, organizational, technical, and oral and written communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work effectively as both a team member and as a leader are critical to success.
¦Ability to work with a diverse range of administrators, faculty, students, and staff.
