Hamilton College Jazz Archive Director Monk Rowe will lead a panel of jazz artists in a discussion on the thought process behind the solo flights of major voices in the jazz world in a discussion titled, "On Improvisation" Sunday, April 23, at 5 p.m. at Jazz Central 441 E. Washington St. Syracuse, N.Y. The event is free and open to the public.

The event is part of the Central New York Jazz Arts Foundation's "Cultural Legacy Speakers Series" and will consist of an evening of jazz greats on video telling their stories along with the discussion with Rowe. Artists like Christian McBride, Ernie Watts, Clark Terry, Bill Charlap, Jon Hendricks, Joe Wilder, Lois Bellson and others will be seen speaking about the sounds, artists and influences that inspired them to play and compose.

According to Larry Luttinger, CNYJAF executive director, "The Hamilton Jazz Archive is the most complete, current and comprehensive in the nation, making these shows as vital, new and important as any Ken Burns documentary - and the public can see them here, live, in Syracuse."

The Jazz Archive is a composite oral and sonic history of 20th-century music and culture that, like the artistry it documents, celebrates both individuality and community. It includes thousands of vintage recordings and scores of historic photos and 250 extended video interviews with both the giants and the unsung sidemen -- and women -- of jazz.
