The Emerson Gallery will jointly host a sculpture symposium with Colgate University titled "Public Art on Campus: A Sculpture Symposium at Colgate University and Hamilton College" on Sept. 8 and 9. The goal of this public symposium is to discuss the role and responsibility of public art in the physical, social and pedagogic space of the college campus. Speakers from across the country will participate in this free two-day event.

The symposium is part of a series of exhibitions and presentations that celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sculpture Space, in Utica, N.Y., an international artists' residency program. It is co-sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Faculty at Hamilton College and the Office of the Dean of Faculty at Colgate University.

On Friday, Sept. 8, Mary Miss, sculptor, filmmaker and environmental artist, will present the keynote address at 4:30 p.m. in Hamilton's Science Auditorium (G027) in the college's Science Center. There will be a reception in the Emerson Gallery in the Christian A. Johnson Building following the presentation. These events are part of the closing ceremonies for the gallery's exhibition, Sculpture Space Inside Outside, which includes outdoor works by Sculpture Space alumni installed on the Hamilton College grounds as well as an indoor exhibit documenting the development of each piece.

On Saturday, Sept. 9, symposium presentations will take place at Colgate University in Golden Auditorium, Little Hall. Topics include "Art on Campus: Who, What, Why and How," "Outdoor Sculpture: Expectation and Reality" and "Beyond the Object: Alternative Forms, Presences, Communities and Places."

For further information, please contact Emerson Gallery, Hamilton College at (315) 859-4396 or visit www.hamilton.edu/college/emerson_gallery. All symposium events are free and open to the public.
