Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg in collaboration with Melissa Davies, education director of the Picker Art Gallery at Colgate University, conducted a daylong seminar, "Understanding Traditional and Modern China through New Media," for public school teachers in Central New York.

Two Hamilton College women's squash players were honored by the New England Small College Athletic Conference on Feb. 26 when the organization announced its all-conference teams and other award winners.

Hamilton College's John DeWitt '09 (Wayland, Mass./Belmont Hill School) has been selected to the 2009 New England Small College Athletic Conference men's squash all-conference team.

Hamilton College shot just 30 percent from the floor and the second-seeded Continentals were upset by No. 3 Rensselaer 64-55 in a Liberty League championship tournament semifinal contest at St. Lawrence University's Burkman Gymnasium on Feb. 27.

"One of the things that always blows me away," said Susan Skerritt to those attending the HALT Committee Luncheon in Eells Hall dining room on Feb. 27, "is that students know so little about Kirkland." Skerritt, who had graduated from Kirkland in 1977 (just a couple of years before the Hamilton-Kirkland merger) and had served as president of the Hamilton Alumni Association, glanced around the room at the juniors and seniors present. Then presenting a question, the answer of which would hopefully solve the dilemma, she asked: "What makes Kirkland so distinctive?"

Associate Professor of English and Associate Dean of Faculty for Diviersity Initiatives Steven Yao gave a lecture on Feb. 26 at Northwestern University. Invited as part of the "Reading World Literature" lecture series hosted by the Program in Comparative Literary Studies, Yao presented a talk titled "On Gaps, Gradients, and (Pacific) Rims: Rethinking the Space of Comparative Literature."

A group of 36 Hamilton students and faculty travelled to Cornell University on Feb. 24, and enjoyed a performance of the Awaji Puppet Theater from Japan. At Cornell, the students watched three plays about deity, love, demon and devotion, and observed the intricate manipulations of the puppets and beautiful accompaniment by chanters and musicians.

As the April 15 deadline for filing tax returns approaches, students in Econ. 235: Policy, Poverty, and Practice are devoting a few hours a week to preparing taxes through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.

Julie Sze, professor of American studies at the University of California-Davis and environmental justice author, will lecture on "Environmental Justice and Environmental Humanities at the Crossroads" at Hamilton College on Monday, March 2. Sze's talk will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Kennedy Auditorium of the Science Center, and is free and open to the public.

Hamilton College competes in the 2009 New England Small College Athletic Conference men's swimming and diving championships at Wesleyan University's Wesleyan Natatorium in Middletown, Conn., this weekend.
