This summer, Abigail Armstrong ’15 interned with the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women (MCSW), an organization dedicated to providing a permanent and effective voice for women across the state.  The organization meets with legislators, endorses legislation and holds public hearings on topics related to women and the issues they face in today’s society.  Armstrong participated in the MCSW’s advocacy for fundamental freedoms and promoting women’s basic human rights, freedom and equality.

Overlook Medical Center in Summit, N.J., gives college juniors and seniors an opportunity to see what a career in medicine is like.  The Overlook Summer Internship Program (OSIP) allows students to shadow medical professionals and gain experience interacting with hospitalized patients.  Liza Gergenti ’14 took advantage of this summer offering and said that she “got a feel for what life during medical school and residencies will be like, including the long hours with very little sleep.”

For an aspiring actor, forming connections with an established theater company and prominent actors is a rare opportunity. This summer, however, Brian Evans ’15 is doing just that through an apprenticeship at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. With support from the Kevin W. Kennedy ’70 Internship Fund for the Arts, he is working on sets, taking acting classes and even performing in a major production.

The American public frequently hears about corruption among politicians. This summer, Kristine Oren ’14 was an intern at the Department of Justice (DOJ), helping in their efforts to crack down on those offenses. With support from the Katharine Eckman ’09 Fund, she is interning with the Public Integrity Section of the DOJ, which prosecutes crime among public officials.

Many Hamilton students are hard at work at fascinating internships this summer. A few even managed to do two. Alicia Rost ’15 is going above the call of duty to give back to her community by interning with two non-profit organizations: The Maine Hunger Initiative and the Environmental Health Strategy Center. Her work this summer is made possible by support from the Joseph F. Anderson ’44 Internship Fund.

Kara Shannon ’14 has never feared going to the dentist. On the contrary, she grew up with an interest in dentistry, inspired by her father, who is a pediatric dentist. This summer, she is exploring her career interest through an internship at the Family & Pediatric Dental Center of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Providence, R.I.

Many students at Hamilton love fashion, but very few get the opportunity to work for a distinguished fashion designer such as Oscar de la Renta, who recently received an honorary degree from Hamilton. This summer, however, Hannah Fine ’15 is interning with the e-commerce team at Oscar de la Renta. She is completing her internship with support from The Class of 2006 Internship Fund.

Vulture funding, a term that refers to private entities investing in cheap, high-risk debt with the hopes of earning high returns when the debtor fails, can threaten the already vulnerable economies of poor countries.  As an example, Argentina has recently suffered losses due to vulture funding and is now recovering from the economic damage. This summer, Charles Allegar ’14 is interning with the Jubilee USA Network, an alliance of 75 U.S. organizations, 50 global partners and other members that challenge the actions of global financial authorities.

Working as a grant writer this summer, Candice McCardle ’15 is helping the Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) raise funds to support the many services they offer.  From youth and senior services to day care programs, the CPC benefits the community in New York City’s Chinatown.

The New England Center for Children (NECC), a school for children diagnosed with autism, has a long-standing close relationship with Hamilton College.  NECC was founded by Hamilton alumnus, Vincent Strully Jr. ’69, who serves as chief executive officer. Each semester, students interested in education and psychology work and take courses there as part of Hamilton’s cooperative education program, managed by James L. Ferguson Professor of Psychology Jonathan Vaughan.  Rosmery Rodriguez ’15 is interning as a full-time teacher with the Center’s students this summer.
