After their original plans to visit the studios of professional artists fell through in October due to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, nine senior art concentrators and art faculty were able to reschedule the always-anticipated trip and visit New York City on Jan. 24-27.

Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh will be exhibiting four works in Matter at the Cazenovia College Art Gallery in Reisman Hall. A reception will be on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 4 – 5:30 p.m. and the show will run through Oct. 5.

Although she is just a rising sophomore, Sarah Scalet ’15 is already nearing the completion of two simultaneous summer art internships. She works as both a costume designer for the non-profit Sitar Arts Center’s summer theater camp in Washington, D.C., and an intern at Red Dirt Studios in Mt. Rainer, Md.

Students sometimes say that life at Hamilton exists in a “bubble” somewhat removed from real-world events off the Hill, but this does not hold true for Danielle Lashley ’13. She chose to spend her summer gaining valuable career experience right here on campus, by pursuing modern studio art work supported by an Emerson Foundation grant. Lashley, an art concentrator, is working with Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh to get a taste of what life as a full- time studio artist might be like.

Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh has a solo exhibition at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art. The show opened on March 2 and runs until May 20.  Titled “Intimate Constructions,” the exhibit questions notions of value and beauty while re-purposing Styrofoam packaging painted vividly with discarded house paints.

Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh has 11 works in the exhibition titled "Fluidity" at the Estel Gallery in Nashville, Tenn. For the pieces in "Fluidity," confetti and watercolor are used as vehicles on paper, wood and aluminum. These abstract works ask the viewer to engage with shifting perceptions of one's reflection. The show is open though August 27.

Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh is exhibiting two works in the exhibition PXL at Anka Gallery in Portland, Ore. "A Microcosmic View of the Dot" and "Cyclical Perspective" will be on view for the month of April. The exhibition features the work of 11 American artists whose work is influenced by the pixel. The show was inspired by Russell A. Kirsch, the progenitor of the pixel and the new variable shaped pixel.

Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh has the art installation “Confection” featured in The Stone Canoe 5: Signs of Life in Culture. The journal is an annual national publication of writing, art and ideas showcasing the work of emerging and established artists with a connection to Central New York. Lynette Stevenson curated the collection of visual artists; the journal was edited by Robert Colley '66 and published by Syracuse University.

Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh is exhibiting in New York City in The Other End of the Line, a major public art installation addressing the connections and differences between the cultures of upstate New York and New York City. Inspired by the freight train High Line's history of transporting goods from upstate New York into New York City, Francis Cape will transport a previously-occupied residential trailer from Sullivan County, N.Y., to Gansevoort Plaza under the High Line.

Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh has artwork featured in the traveling exhibition “Hidden Heroes: The Genius of Everyday Things” at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany. For this exhibition the museum seeks to illuminate four aspects of design that include innovation, production, evolution and inspiration.
