  • John DeGuardi ’16 is a chemistry major but spent two months this summer working out the age of Woody Island Siltstone, an unusual black shale found in Tasmania, Australia. He and Adrien Hilmy ’13 were awarded a Dickson-Rodgers summer research stipend and worked in a high tech laboratory at the University of Houston.

  • During his time at Hamilton, Jonathan Michel ’13 proved himself to be highly motivated and organized. A four-year starter on the offensive line of the football team, he also found time to play club hockey and serve as the chair of the Judicial Board. Michel describes balancing his extracurricular commitments with coursework as “an exercise in discipline and time management.” He put those skills to good use and applied for dental school beginning directly after Hamilton.

  • It might sound surprising, but studying two neurotransmitters found in drosophila, a genus of small flies, may help us better understand human brain chemistry.  While most people may not regularly think about neurotransmitters in our brains, these chemicals are the stimuli behind our frustrations when stuck in traffic or our elevated stress levels when facing a seemingly never-ending pile of assignments. Ashley Perritt ’14 and Niko Wagner ’14 are studying tyramine beta hydroxylase (TBh) and TBh-Related (TBhR) neurotransmitter genes in drosophila to better understand their functions.
