Communications Office writer Evan Robinson ’23 recently spoke with Ariel Adams, Hamilton’s new director of student activities, who previously held similar roles at SUNY Potsdam and the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The two discussed Adams’ career path and her thoughts on starting out at Hamilton. Below are excerpts from their conversation.

Virginia Davis ’25 spent the spring 2023 semester living and learning in the Big Apple through Hamilton’s New York City Program.

For some students, summer is a time to relax and decompress; for others, it is a time to develop résumés and professional qualifications. For a few members of the Hamilton baseball team, it offers the perfect opportunity to improve their game — only a few minutes from campus.

On Sunday, June 25, the New York City Pride Parade took place on the streets of Manhattan, celebrating sexuality and advocating for social and political change. Among the hundreds of thousands of attendees were 32 Hamilton students on a trip organized by the Days-Massolo Center (DMC) and Gender and Sexuality Union, whose planning and funding made this opportunity possible for the second year in a row.

Writing is hard; writing well is even harder. And like most skills, it takes practice to get better. Students at Hamilton have been perfecting their writing skills outside of the classroom as far back as the early 1830s with the debut of a literary magazine known as The Talisman.

Women's hockey defender Abby Kuhns '23 (Skaneateles, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee School [Conn.]) and men's golfer Billy Geach '23 (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. George's College) were honored as Hamilton College's top athletes from the Class of 2023 at the Jack B. Riffle Celebration for senior varsity athletes on Tuesday, May 16.

Student writer and Untitled@Large theatre club member Alyssa Samuels ’25 shares her experiences producing the Suddenly the Musical, which debuted at Hamilton this spring. The Events Barn stage lights glowed brightly on April 27, illuminating the shapes of actors moving to the music and smiles from the audience surrounding them. Suddenly the Musical, an Australian show, was performed for the first time without its original cast at Hamilton. Produced by the student group Untitled@Large, the show was special not only for premiere status, but also because every step of its process signified a chance for student growth and accomplishment.

The return of the HamTrek triathlon on April 28 after a pandemic pause saw Drew Frey ’23 the overall winner of the 2023 event with a time of 56:30, and Rebecca Dalphin ’25 as the women’s winner with a time of 1:11:47.

The Hamilton College Theatre Department presents the spring mainstage production, Rent, by Jonathan Larson, directed by Professor of Theatre Mark Cryer. Performances of the sold-out musical continue April 19 to April 22 at 7:30 p.m., and April 22 at 2 p.m., in the Romano Theatre in Kennedy Center for Theatre and Studio Arts.

Ten members of Hamilton’s Junior Seminar art class visited New York City last week with Professor Rob Knight. Junior Seminar is a rite of passage for art concentrators to come together as a class and begin independently developing their artistic practices in a communal environment. Our three-day NYC adventure exposed us to the real-life art world. We visited several galleries, met with artists in their studios, and even attended a group art show that included a piece by Charlie Guterman ’22.
