Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics,  was interviewed for the second time this week on American Public Media’s  Marketplace program. In a segment broadcast on Friday, Sept. 20, titled “Why the Federal Reserve's decisions matter to you,”   Owen discussed how decisions made by the Federal Reserve affect our financial lives in many ways.

Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, was quoted on American Public Media’s  Marketplace Evening Report broadcast on Monday, Sept. 16. In a segment titled “What does the Fed chair actually do?,” Owen discussed the Federal Reserve’s breadth of authority.

In a Levitt Center group research project this summer, Samantha Sherman ’15, Timothy Cowan ’15 and Kelly Osterling ’15 are searching for factors that drive success in small cities.  Unique policies are typically implemented in micropolitan areas (defined as containing an urban core of at least 10,000, but less than 50,000, population),  to better serve the local economies and populations.  The students are finding similarities between these successful or failing communities and will introduce constructive policy reforms.

An All Things Considered report on National Public Radio that focused on the upside of Iowa’s drought last summer included an interview with Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics. In “The Silver Lining In Drought: 5 Upsides To Rain-Free Weather,” Owen discussed the study, “Heat Waves, Droughts, and Preferences for Environmental Policy,” that she co-authored with Assistant Professor of Economics Emily Conover, Associate Professor of Economics Julio Videras and Professor of Economics Stephen Wu.

The national media highlighted Hamilton College in multiple ways throughout 2012 by focusing on faculty research and expertise, featuring opinion pieces, and announcing new endeavors and special student projects. From The Today Show to NPR’s All Things Considered to The Chronicle of Higher Education, the college was visible in the media across the country.

Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, was quoted on American Public Media’s  Marketplace Morning Report broadcast on Tuesday, Dec. 11, in a segment titled “Fed expected to continue ‘QE3’.” Speaking in advance of the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee today and tomorrow, Owen responded to whether or not quantitative easing was working.

A team of Hamilton economics students took second place in the annual Fed Challenge in New York City on Nov. 14. This was Hamilton’s  best finish to date and  the second year in a row that the Hamilton team advanced to the final round. The Challenge is a team competition for undergraduate college students inspired by the working of the Federal Open Market Committee. Hamilton advanced to the finals after a first-round victory on Nov. 9.
