Hamilton will host a faculty panel discussion, “Europe in Crisis,” on Thursday, April 2, at 7 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Associate Professor of Government Sharon Rivera taught a course at an international summer school on political linguistics sponsored by the Higher School of Economics in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.  The summer school, “Language and Power: The Linguistics of Migration,” was an intensive research program for advanced undergraduates and graduate students from Russia, Austria and Ukraine.

Associate Professor of Government Sharon Werning Rivera and Scholar-in-Residence David W. Rivera published “The Purposes of Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in American Higher Education: A Brief Introduction” as a chapter in a compendium of proceedings of the Second International Business Summit.

Sharon Werning Rivera, associate professor of government, and David W. Rivera, scholar-in-residence,  published “Is Russia a Militocracy? Conceptual Issues and Extant Findings Regarding Elite Militarization,” in Post-Soviet Affairs (No. 1 2014: 27-40). Post-Soviet Affairs is one of the leading area-studies journals for political scientists working on East Central Europe and Eurasia.  

Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C., met with George D. Baker ’74 and Frank C. Vlossak IV ’89 for an in-depth discussion of lobbying on Jan. 29. Baker and Vlossak are principals at Williams and Jensen PLLC, one of the few leading independent law firms in Washington with a practice focused primarily on lobbying.

Scholar-in-Residence David W. Rivera presented two series of lectures from Nov. 22 to Dec. 3 in Moscow. The invited lectures focused on findings of ongoing research he is conducting with Associate Professor of Government Sharon Werning Rivera.

Students in Associate Professor of Government Sharon Rivera’s “Introduction to Russian Studies” class (RSNST 100) participated in a teleconference with students from MGIMO University (the Moscow State Institute of International Affairs) on Nov. 15.  MGIMO is one of the most prestigious universities in the Russian Federation and enrolls over 6,000 students with international interests. 

Associate Professor of Government Sharon Werning Rivera led a workshop on using active learning techniques in higher education at the Moscow State Institute of International Affairs (MGIMO) in August.

Associate Professor of Government Sharon Werning Rivera and Scholar-in-Residence David W. Rivera led a workshop on pedagogical techniques in higher education on July 3 at the Linguistics University of Nizhny Novgorod (LUNN) in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

The students in Associate Professor of Government Sharon Rivera’s introductory comparative politics course (Government 112) participated in a mock election debate in the fictitional country of West Europa on April 30 in the Kennedy Auditorium.
