Professor of Government Robert Martin recently published a research article in the French scholarly journal, Participations.

Barbara Gold, the Edward North Professor of Classics, recently attended the annual meeting of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS). The event took place in Toronto Jan. 5th to 8th.

Over winter break, Hamilton College’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program sent seven students to Baton Rouge, La., as ASB’s first ever winter break trip. The students went to help local residents recover from the disastrous flash flood this past August.

In the email below sent to the Hamilton community on Jan. 17, 2017, President David Wippman announced the death of Lecturer in Communication Tom Phelan. "I write with the very sad news that Lecturer in Communication Tom Phelan suffered a heart attack this morning and passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Professor Catherine Phelan, and family."

Students, faculty and staff gathered on Monday, Jan. 16, in the Fillius Events Barn to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Participants shared a dinner of some of King’s favorite foods and engaged in conversation about King’s inspiring words and viewpoints.

For the past six years a group of students has returned from winter break early to converge on the otherwise vacant Kirner-Johnson academic building. One group of 28 comes with the hopes of learning how to recognize, develop and practice the kinds of leadership skills that are essential to create personal and societal change. These are students participating in the Levitt Leadership Institute (LLI).

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Courtney Gibbons was the co-organizer and co-chair of a session at the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM). The meeting took place in Atlanta Jan. 4th to 7th.

For the last week of winter break, a small group of Hamilton students set off into the Adirondack backcountry for five days of winter camping in New York’s High Peaks region.

Thirty-eight members of the class of ’20 as well as 12 transfer students arrived on the Hill on Jan. 13 to register, move in and take part in Hamilton orientation.
