Former Assistant Secretary of State Anne Richard will give a lecture titled “Refugee Policy in the Obama and Trump Administrations” on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m., in the Chapel. The lecture is free and open to the public.

For many students pursuing a higher education, a common goal relates to finding ways to give back upon graduation. At Hamilton, students like Anyi Rescalvo ’22 are able to get a jump-start on giving back through opportunities for career-related experiences during the summer.

Boyle Heights is a vibrant, tight-knit neighborhood with a long history of activism on the East Side of Los Angeles. Over the years, a wide-range of nonprofit organizations have risen to uplift the community in a multitude of ways while addressing important issues impacting the area.

Using skills she learned in a Hamilton first-year career development program, Fabiola (Faby) Alvarez ’22 secured two summer internships: teaching children how to dance and helping Japanese students learn English.

When part of a 25-year-old press at Hamilton’s Print Shop unexpectedly broke down, the machine quickly became inoperable. Townsend Industries, the manufacturer of this T-51 printer, closed down in mid-2010, making it nearly impossible to find replacement parts for the press. Thanks to help from LITS and a student though, the machine is now back in service.

Erik S. McDuffie ’92 returned to the Hill on April 10 to highlight the intersectionality of racial justice and women’s rights. The lecture, sponsored by the History Department, served to bring awareness to the often overlooked impact black women have had in social movements over the years.

The Hamilton community warmly welcomed Pulitzer Prize-winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen on April 9 as part of the Winton Tolles Lecture Series. A group of students and faculty members joined Nguyen for dinner in the Philip Spencer House to talk before convening in the Chapel for his presentation titled “Refugee Stories and American Greatness.”

In the true spirit of Hamilton’s liberal arts education, various classes offer students an opportunity for unique experiences in the field of Humanities. Taught by Professor Knauer, The Matter of the Text focuses on exploring the material conditions of the texts we read and how the medium in which they’re presented affects how we understand them.

Members of the cultural organization La Vanguardia joined students and young professionals from various different colleges across the country for a conference from March 8 - 10 to highlight the amazing work being done by Dominicans in the United States. The event, hosted at Columbia University in New York City, served as a celebration of the Dominican identity.
