Charlotte Channing Shilling '01

Charlotte Channing Shilling '01, a freelance writer and editor, was born on May 22, 1979, in Rich-mond, VA. The daughter of Susanne L. and Alfred L. Shilling, both attorneys-at-law, she grew up in Richmond and was graduated in 1997 from the Collegiate School in that city. She came to College Hill that fall and quickly impressed an ever-growing number of friends with her "funny, sassy energy" and "incredible sense of humor." Her vitality and wonderfully rowdy wit was combined with candor and compassion, and for many who participated with her in late-night suite gatherings, she left indelible memories. She was also known for her commitment to the craft of writing, as evidenced by her tireless efforts as a creative writing major to fashion the perfect sentence.

Following her graduation in 2001, Charlotte Shilling, also known as Channing, pursued that craft, and found employment with the Bergman Group, a communications company in Virginia. Most recently she was engaged in freelance writing and editing in Richmond, her hometown. With her vibrant per-sonality, she continued to expand her circle of friends, especially among those she encountered at the local dog park where she customarily went with her pet.

Charlotte Channing Shilling's many friends were shocked to learn of her death on August 22, 2009. In addition to her mother and father, she is survived by her brother, Alfred Tanner Shilling, as well as a niece and nephew.
