Course Description: | This course surveys the history of Viking Age Europe and the North Atlantic (ca. 800-1100) with a particular focus on the patterns and networks of trade, raiding, and settlement forged by Scandinavian peoples across the continent in the early Middle Ages, from Eastern Europe, the British Isles, and France, to Iceland and the more ephemeral Norse settlements in present-day Greenland and Newfoundland. Special attention will be paid to the study of Old Norse culture and religion, images of Viking violence, cross-cultural contacts and exchange – particularly processes of Christianization – and the longer-term impacts of Scandinavian settlement and colonization in Europe, Russia, and the North Atlantic. |
