Course Description: This research seminar examines the memory of the American Civil War from 1865 until today. As monuments tumble across the country, we will consider how those memorials became such a prominent part of the American landscape. After the war, northern and southern societies, Black and white people, and men and women developed competing visions of the war’s meaning. We will look at the memory of the war through film, novels, commemorations, battlefield reenactments, and of course, monuments.
