Course Description: What makes some states weak or strong, stable, or unstable? In this course, we conduct a comparative and historical analysis of the emergence and evolution of the modern state in different regions of the world. We cover a range of topics including the theories of the state, the concept of state capacity and its measurement, the rise and decline of the Welfare State, state-building and its challenges in the developing world, the "Developmental State" and its economic achievements in East Asia, and the problem of fragile states in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
