Course Description: | Consideration of the origins and underpinnings of authoritarian rule. Examines variation in the formal and informal institutions of authoritarian systems as well as the conditions under which transition may take place. Emphasis on critical reading of a growing theoretical and empirical literature in order to gain an understanding the particular problems posed within and by authoritarian regimes. |
