Course Description:

This course will explore the biochemical adaptations of marine mammals. How do marine mammals dive so deeply and hold their breath for so long? How do they stay hydrated while living in salt water? How do they see, hear, and produce sound underwater? What human made contaminants bioaccumulate and what are the biochemical mechanisms and effects of these toxicants? These questions and more will be explored through the lens of structure function biochemistry.
