The Arkell Hall Foundation
The Arkell Hall Foundation Scholarship was established by the Arkell Hall Foundation and is awarded with preference given to students from Canajoharie and the surrounding area.
The Arkell Hall Foundation, based in Canajoharie, supports efforts that benefit the community within the surrounding area. This scholarship was established in 1976 at the request of Foundation’s trustee, William MacKenzie, Hamilton Class of 1947.
William “Bill” MacKenzie graduated from Lowville High School and, like so many Hamiltonians in the 1940s, had his collegiate experience intertwined with World War II. In July of 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and was called to active duty in August of that year. Following his discharge as a first lieutenant and graduation from Hamilton, he went on to earn his LL.B. at Cornell University in 1952. That same year, he began practicing law in his hometown and, in 1973, was appointed as Montgomery County Attorney. He married Anita Sawin, sister of William W. Sawin, Jr., Class of 1946, in 1954 and the couple had five children. Bill and Anita traveled extensively following his retirement in 1992, eventually settling in Texas.
