The Alfred L. and Maryann Garbarino Putnam Scholarship Fund
The Alfred L. and Maryann Garbarino Putnam Scholarship Fund was established by Alfred L. Putnam, Class of 1938, and Maryann Garbarino Putnam. Preference will be given to students achieving excellence in mathematics, the mathematical sciences or the natural sciences.
Alfred L. Putnam earned his B.S. degree with honors in mathematics, chemistry and physics in 1942. He left the Hill, as he later recalled, with “a zest for learning, some skill in analytical thinking, a taste for teaching, and a concern for effective expression.”
A Root Fellowship from Hamilton took Mr. Putnam to Harvard University, where pursuing graduate study in mathematics, he earned his A.M. degree in 1939 and his Ph.D. in 1942. That year, he began his teaching career as an instructor in math at Yale University. In 1945, he left New Haven to accept appointment as an assistant professor at the University of Chicago. Promoted to full professor in 1963, he would remain on Chicago’s faculty for 41 years until his retirement in 1986.
