The David J. Doyle '39 Scholarship
The David J. Doyle ’39 Scholarship, established by the Estate of Muriel J. Doyle, widow of David J. Doyle ’39, is awarded with preference given to students demonstrating financial need from Orleans County, New York.
Following his graduation from Hamilton, David J. Doyle completed a year of graduate study in languages at Tulane University and began his career in education as a language teacher at Remsen High School.
In 1942, he was called into military service with the U.S. Army. On October 17 of that year, the day following his graduation from Officer Candidate School, 2nd Lt. Doyle was married to Muriel C. Jones in her hometown of Clinton, NY. He remained on active duty through the end of World War II. Captain Doyle and his company landed on Omaha Beach shortly after D-Day and they continued to supply General Patton’s 3rd Army forces as they pushed through France into Germany.
Released from the Army, Mr. Doyle obtained his master’s degree in educational administration at Columbia University and resumed teaching in Greene, NY, where he also served as vice principal. Mr. Doyle began his tenure as superintendent of the Kendall (NY) Central Schools in 1954. He continued in that post until his retirement, achieving many professional successes and accomplishments.
