The Douw Henry Fonda Memorial Scholarship
The Douw Henry Fonda Memorial Scholarship in Journalism, established in 1993, is awarded to students who have distinguished themselves as writers and who are considering a career in journalism. This scholarship was established through a bequest from Jane Fonda Randolph in memory of her brother, Douw H. Fonda, Class of 1931.
Douw Henry Fonda, Jr. was born in New York City. He matriculated to Hamilton, majoring in English and political science. He was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, participated in the College’s Press Board, and graduated as salutatorian in 1931. Following his graduation from Columbia School of Journalism in 1932, he worked as reporter and assistant editor of the Utica Daily Press until 1934, when he took a job as desk editor for the Associated Press in Boston. In 1940, he transferred to New York. During World War II, he worked in London and Switzerland. In 1961, Douw was named chief librarian and editor of the AP’s biographical service, serving in that position for more than 25 years.
