The Dr. Walter F. Cronin Scholarship
The Dr. Walter F. Cronin Scholarship was established in 1977 by Mrs. Cronin in memory of her husband, Walter F. Cronin, Class of 1938.
Walter Francis Cronin was born in Oneida, New York. He entered Hamilton in 1934, where he majored in German and political science. He was also a member of the debate club. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the Army's Quartermaster Corps, reaching the rank of Captain. He was discharged in 1946 and married Ardith Canfield Lakin the following year in Portland, Maine. He soon attended Harvard University, earning a Ph.D. in 1950, and then began working in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research as a foreign affairs analyst and diplomatic historian. In the late 1960s, he became chief historian for the U.S. Department of Transportation. Dr. Cronin died tragically in an automobile accident in 1977 at the age of 59.
