The Southern Tier Scholarship

The Southern Tier Scholarship, established in 1987 by Dr. James E. Vaughan, Class of 1967, is awarded to a student from the Binghamton or Elmira areas of New York who qualifies for financial aid. If there is no such eligible student, it may be used for any student who qualifies for financial aid.


Dr. Vaughan, a cardiac surgeon, was born in Binghamton, New York. He graduated from Hamilton in 1967 with an A.B. in chemistry. A member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, he played varsity basketball on College Hill. He went on to earn his M.D. from Columbia University in 1971. James married Anne Donahue in 1973; they have four children, including Tim, Class of 2003.
