Joan G. Romano enjoyed a long-standing closeness and affinity for Hamilton engendered by her father John P. Gualtieri, Phi Beta Kappa, Class of 1925. A Harvard Law School graduate, named by Governor Rockefeller as the presiding judge of the New York State Court of Claims, he was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree by Hamilton in 1964. Prior to his judgeship as a practicing attorney in Rome, New York, Judge Gualtieri built the home on College Hill where Hamilton’s Vice President of Communications and Development currently resides. Mrs. Romano’s brother, John P. Gualtieri, Jr., graduated with Hamilton’s Class of 1957.

A graduate of Sweet Briar College and the University of Akron School of Law, Joan Gualtieri served as an assistant prosecuting attorney of Summit County, Ohio, and later as legal counsel of the county’s department of human services, retiring in 1997. She and Anthony F. Romano were married in Clinton at St. Mary’s Church in September 1958, and had three children: Anne Valentine McDonnell, Esq., Mary Perin Lasell, Class of 1985, and Anthony F. Romano, Jr.

Anthony F. Romano prepared at the Peddie School and arrived on College Hill from Martins Creek, Pennsylvania. Following his graduation from Hamilton, he served in the U.S. Army. Over a 35-year career with Columbian Chemicals Co., he held various sales and sales management positions. Now retired, he resides in Akron, Ohio.
