The Ann and Russell McLean Scholarship
The Ann and Russell McLean Scholarship is awarded annually to entering students demonstrating financial need and leadership capabilities, with first preference given to students from Minnesota. This scholarship was established in 2001 in memory of Ann and C. Russell McLean, Class of 1943.
Charles Russell McLean, Jr. attended the Hill School in Pennsylvania and matriculated at Hamilton in 1939. He was a member of several intramural teams, the Interfraternity Council, and Chi Psi fraternity, for which he served as president. After graduating from Hamilton in 1943, he joined the U. S. Navy and was stationed on the U.S.S. Mississippi as a Lieutenant.
Russell began his career by managing multiple family properties, including the Spalding Hotel, which would become a Duluth landmark. Eventually, he became vice president of Office Services, Inc., a group of local real estate and financial property management businesses. Aside from a distinguished career in real estate and business, he also raised a family of eight children with his wife, Ann Hughes, whom he married in 1948. Devoted to his community, he served as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and as a volunteer of Duluth’s chapter of the American Cancer Society. He died in 2000. His daughter, Mary McLean Evans, is a member of the Hamilton Class of 1982, and Assistant Vice President/Executive Director of the Maurice Horowitch Career Center.
