The Charles Edward Doran, Jr. '51 Scholarship
The Charles Edward Doran, Jr. ’51 Scholarship, established by Richard F. Kadlick, Class of 1979, in memory of his uncle, is awarded with preference given to students who are concentrating in American history.
Charles Edward Doran came to Hamilton in 1945, leaving at the end of his freshman year for a two-year stint in the United States Navy. Subsequently, he returned to his studies, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and with honors in history. During his time on the Hill he was a staff member for the Hamiltonews, went out for fencing and was inducted into Chi Psi, serving as that fraternity’s pledge instructor and scholarship chairman. His scholarship was recognized with the Darling Prize in American History, awarded to the senior having the most distinguished record in at least four courses in American history.
Charles went on to earn his M.A. degree in history at Yale University (1952). He began his career as a trainee at Hartford Connecticut Trust Company, moving on quickly to a training program at General Electric Company. He went on to serve in various financial management positions at General Electric, including credit and collection supervisor for the New York City-based GE International. He left General Electric in 1965 to become assistant treasurer for textile manufacturers Collins & Aikman, headquartered in Manhattan. In 1971, he was promoted to corporate treasurer, remaining in that role until his retirement in 1988.
A lifetime member of The Yale Club of New York City and an active parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church in Bedford, NY, Charles was also active in various professional organizations and served on the advisory board of the Arkwright-Boston Insurance Company. Charles Edward Doran shared his love of Hamilton with his son, John, Class of 1986, and his daughter, Pamela, Class of 1987, and his nephew, Richard Kadlick, Class of 1979. Personifying the consummate Hamiltonian, he was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and a loving, devoted, and caring husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother.
Richard F. Kadlick, Class of 1979, was born in Greenwich, CT, and majored in economics at Hamilton. He was a recipient of the Wertimer Prize Scholarships in Economics, and participated in various athletic programs. In addition, as a student on the Hill, he worked in the Computer Center and served as a calculus tutor. Following graduation, he earned a J.D. from Georgetown Law School in 1982. He is currently an attorney and senior partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in New York City. Richard and his wife, Deborah, enjoy renovating older homes, gardening, landscaping, and antique collecting, and are the parents of two children including John, Hamilton Class of 2018.
