The Cowles Family Scholarship
The Cowles Family Scholarship was established in 2011 by Hamilton Charter Trustee Julia Cowles, Class of 1984, in memory of her parents, Chauncey Cowles, Class of 1933, and Janet Crowley Cowles, to mark the occasion of Mr. Cowles’ 100th birthday. It is awarded with preference given to students who are U.S. citizens demonstrating financial need.
Julia K. Cowles was born in Buffalo, New York. At Hamilton, she majored in creative writing with a minor in psychology, and participated in club-level ice hockey and lacrosse. After graduating in 1984, she moved to New York City and worked as a legal assistant for a law firm. This confirmed her decision to become a lawyer and, soon after, she pursued a law degree at Fordham University, where she received her J.D. cum laude. Reflecting on her time at Hamilton, Julia says her four years on the Hill "opened the door to new ideas" and "gave me the confidence that I can achieve and helped push me to try harder. The 'outside world' is competitive and confidence is essential." Julia's father, Chauncey Deming Cowles, Jr., was a member of Hamilton's Class of 1933. He served in the U.S. Navy for three years during World War II and was highly successful in the insurance industry, eventually establishing his own firm. He passed away in 1998.
