The Gertrude F. Bristol Scholarship
The Gertrude F. Bristol Scholarship, established in 1975 by William M. "Mac" Bristol III, Class of 1943, in memory of his aunt, is awarded to a student who is not a resident of New York State and who is likely to make a substantial contribution to the College’s extracurricular activities.
Gertrude Flesh Bristol was an active member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and wife of former Hamilton College student Henry Platt Bristol, Class of 1910. The two wed in 1928 in Paris and made their home in Brooklyn, where Henry served as treasurer, president and chairman of Bristol-Myers Co., a pharmaceutical firm co-founded by his father. Henry’s career, however, did not distance him from Hamilton, where he served as Trustee for most of his life. Gertrude also became highly involved with the College, establishing the Henry P. Bristol Professor of International Affairs chair in 1963. She also played an important role in a $2 million contribution from the Henry P. Bristol estate in 1968; at the time, the largest single gift donated by an individual in the history of the College. Later that year, Gertrude further expressed loyalty to Hamilton through a generous gift of $250,000 from her estate. Gertrude Flesh Bristol died in 1968.
