The First Generation Scholarship
The First Generation Scholarship is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, with preference given to first-generation college students.
In December of 2007, the College received an anonymous gift of $1 million from a member of the Board of Trustees and his wife to provide need-based scholarships to students who are the first in their family to attend college.
As the first member of her own family to attend college, Hamilton's president, Joan Hinde Stewart, was especially moved by the gift, remarking that "half the members of Hamilton's current senior administration are first-generation college graduates, making all of us especially sensitive to the needs of this particular group of students. The generosity and foresight of these donors reflect the strength of the Hamilton community and help the College to provide talented young people with the opportunity to have a fine liberal arts education regardless of financial need."
The donors hope that their anonymity, along with their generous gift, will inspire and encourage others to make similar contributions in support of scholarship aid.
