The Ralph Upson Stone Memorial Fund
The Ralph Upson Stone Memorial Fund, established in 1997, provides support for students taking private music lessons at the College who demonstrate financial need. This fund was established in memoriam by the family and friends of Ralph U. Stone, Class of 1980.
A talented musician and public servant, Ralph Stone was born in Syracuse, New York. An Eagle Scout, Ralph expressed a passion and talent for music from a young age with a special affinity for the piano. Ralph enrolled at Hamilton, after he graduated from Canton High School in Hartford, Connecticut.
On the Hill, Ralph was a member of the College Choir, the Buffers a cappella group, and the Sigma Phi fraternity. He graduated in 1980 with a degree in music. Ralph’s mother described him as a “peace-loving young man with a will to help those in underdeveloped countries.” Ralph taught English with the Peace Corps in the Congo for two years and earned an M.A. in International Educational Development from Columbia University Teachers’ College in 1986. Fluent in French, he worked for the Center for Disease Control as a consultant on the Ivory Coast and was director of training at the Center for Development and Population Activities. He died in 1997, a victim of homicide. At that time, he was finishing his doctoral dissertation at George Washington University on “Women Leaders in Kenya.” His dissertation was completed and successfully defended by his mother, Anne.
Other members of the Stone family associated with Hamilton are Ralph's father, Frederick L. Stone, Class of 1951; his brothers David A. Stone, Class of 1988, and Frederick W. Stone, Class of 1979; his great-grandfather, Bradford W. Sherwood, Class of 1882; his great-uncle, Edwin B. Sherwood, Class of 1920; and his niece, Louisa D. Stone, Class of 2017.
