The William L. Hoyt Scholarship

The William L. Hoyt Scholarship was established by Edmund R. Pitcher, Class of 1968, in honor of his mentor William L. Hoyt, Class of 1959.

William L. Hoyt: At Hamilton, Bill majored in English, joined Delta Kappa Epsilon, was co-captain of lacrosse, and co-captain and MVP of Hamilton's only undefeated football team. Following graduation, Bill dedicated his life and career to secondary education. He began as an English teacher and football coach at Stoneham High School, earned master's and doctorate degrees, and, over the course of his career, served in positions of increasing responsibility including principal and superintendent of schools, and made significant contributions to national and international development of effective secondary education. He continued his career of leadership as a college lecturer in standards of excellence in secondary education. Among his many accolades was the Richard J. Bradley Endowment Fund Award, presented annually to an active New England educator whose exemplary work maintains and advocates high standards of excellence in education.

During his career, Bill engaged in nearly a dozen volunteer roles for Hamilton. Notably, he identified many students he perceived might have the qualifications to attend and benefit from a Hamilton education, many of whom were the first in their families to attend college, one being Edmund Pitcher.

Edmund R. Pitcher: While at Hamilton, Ted majored in chemistry, played varsity ice hockey, and pledged DKE, his mentor's fraternity. Following graduation, he returned to New England where, with the help of Bill Hoyt, he began his professional life as a chemistry teacher. While teaching, Ted pursued a law degree at night earning his J.D., magna cum laude, in 1974. He went on to enjoy a successful career as an attorney specializing in protection of intellectual property, particularly in drug development. After experience in a venture capital firm specializing in early stage life science opportunities,
he retired from private practice in 2014 to dedicate professional time to his efforts at entrepreneurship.
