The Robert P. Rich '41 Scholarship
The Robert P. Rich ’41 Scholarship was established by Robert P. Rich, Class of 1941.
Robert Peter Rich was born in Lowville, New York. He graduated from the Lowville Academy in 1936 and subsequently enrolled at Hamilton. He was a member of Emerson Literary Society and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. He graduated in 1941, having majored in mathematics and English.
After serving in World War II, Robert took advantage of the GI Bill and earned a Ph.D. in theoretical mathematics from Johns Hopkins University in 1950. He developed a passion and enthusiasm for computers and directed the University’s computing center until 1985. In addition to serving as a professor of biomedical engineering, he also helped to establish the computer center at the JHU Medical School. He served as president of the Maryland Academy of Sciences from 1967 to 1979. Robert died in 2007 at the age of 88.
