The Florence Husband and Paul Parker Scholarship
The Florence Husband and Paul Parker Scholarship was established in honor of Florence Husband, an accomplished photographer, and Paul Parker, a long-time professor of art at Hamilton, and is awarded with preference given to students enrolled in art or photography courses.
Paul Parker, a professor of art at Hamilton and a skillful painter, was born in LaGrange, Illinois. He grew up in the Midwest and received his B.A. from the University of Illinois in 1926 and his A.M. in art history from the University of Chicago in 1937. During his college years, he taught life drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago, which inspired him to choose teaching as his profession. From 1937 to 1940, he was the head of the art department at the University of South Dakota before becoming the Director of the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center and later Director at the Des Moines Art Center.
Paul left Des Moines and was hired by Hamilton President Thomas Brown Rudd to teach at the College. Paul remained at Hamilton for 22 years until his retirement in 1970. After his retirement, Paul met Florence Husband, a photographer and former journalist, on his travels in Mexico and they married in 1975. Paul died in 1987 and, upon Florence’s death in 1995, his paintings were donated to the College to be sold to establish this scholarship.
