The David B. Parker Memorial Scholarship
The David B. Parker Memorial Scholarship was established in 1980 in honor of David Bruce Parker, Class of 1975. This scholarship is awarded to a member of the junior class who has completed the first three years at Hamilton with distinction in the study of French and/or history. The recipient must have demonstrated promise for useful citizenship through his or her character, scholarly attitude, the respect accorded to the individual by members of the faculty, standing among peers, and contribution to the extracurricular life of the College.
David Bruce Parker was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He graduated from Lenox High School as valedictorian in 1971 and entered Hamilton in the fall of that year. He was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and spent his junior year abroad with the Hamilton program in France. David was a talented thespian: in 1972 he co-founded the Alexander Hamilton Players, a student theater company that toured New England and New York with a successful production of 1776, in which David played Thomas Jefferson. In 1975, he graduated with honors in history, in addition to being elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
David pursued graduate studies at the University of Rochester and earned an M.A. degree in 1977. David became a teaching assistant at Rochester, where he received the Rush Rhees Fellowship Award for three years in a row in addition to the Wilson Coates Book Award, which recognized his distinguished work in intellectual history. He was close to receiving his Ph.D. when he died in 1980 from a protracted illness.
