The Musselman Family Scholarship
The Musselman Family Scholarship was established in 2006 by Francis H. Musselman, Class of 1950, in honor and memory of four generations of Musselman family members, including his father J. Joseph Musselman, Class of 1917.
Francis “Fran” Musselman was born in Utica, New York. After finishing high school in 1942 at the age of 16, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a gunner’s mate on the USS Heywood L. Edwards stationed in the Pacific during World War II. Afterwards, he attended Hamilton, concentrating in political science and French. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Fran graduated from Hamilton in 1950, and earned an LL.B. degree from Columbia University. He then became a managing partner for the law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, receiving recognition as a specialist in bankruptcy law. He was a Life Trustee of Hamilton, and in 2005 received an honorary degree “for serving the legal community with great distinction and for contributing to the College his wisdom and sound judgment.” When asked what his Hamilton experience has meant to him, he answered in a single word: “Everything.” Fran died in 2013 at age 87.
Several members of the Musselman family are members of the alumni body: Fran's father, J. Joseph , Class of 1917; his uncle, Francis C. , Class of 1925; his brothers, Bernard C. , Class of 1954, and John J., Jr., Class of 1947; his daughter Carol M.
