The Illinois Scholarship Foundation Fund
The Illinois Scholarship Foundation Fund was established in 1999 by the Scholarship Fund Foundation of Chicago. The fund supports scholarships for students in need of financial assistance. Preference is given to students from Illinois, with first preference given to students from the greater Chicago area.
The Illinois Scholarship Fund Foundation was chartered in 1951 as a not-for-profit corporation. The corporation was founded with start-up funds from the Walter P. Murphy Foundation, Inc., named after the founder of the Standard Railway Equipment Company, who was also a noted philanthropist of higher education. Several Hamilton alumni served on the corporation’s board of directors, including C.F. Hemenway, Class of 1910, president and chairman of the organization. These affiliations led to several donations to Hamilton on behalf of students and alumni from Illinois. Ultimately, the corporation’s president, Calvin Selfridge, Class of 1955, and a Chicago-area attorney, transferred the financial corpus generating these grants to Hamilton for scholarship purposes.
