The Carlyle Fraser Scholarship
The Carlyle Fraser Scholarship was established in 1988 by Jane Fraser in memory of her uncle, Carlyle Fraser, Class of 1917.
Carlyle Fraser was a native of Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, and a member of Hamilton's Class of 1917. He left the College after two years, enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving during World War I as a second lieutenant. By 1919, he had been discharged from the Army and was appointed as sales manager of the Superior Motor Parts Company in Pittsburgh. In 1925, he became one of the co-founders of the National Auto Parts Association (NAPA) in Wheeling, West Virginia. Subsequently, he moved to Atlanta in 1928 and founded the Genuine Parts Company, which became one of the largest manufacturers of automobile replacement parts in the world. Carlyle died in 1961.
Carlyle's brother, Malcolm, was a member of the Class of 1924. He joined his brother's business in 1928, and was recognized by Hamilton with an honorary degree (L.H.D.) in 1989.
Carlyle’s niece, Jane Fraser, was a member of Hamilton’s Board of Trustees, and her son, Jean Gruss, is a member of the Class of 1989.
